KTC Constructs Informational Kiosk
with Grant from the Kodak American Greenways Awards Program |
|
|
The Klickitat Trail Conservancy (KTC) received national recognition and a $500 grant from the Kodak American Greenways Awards Program. The grant funded building materials for an informational kiosk in the town of Klickitat. KTC contributed volunteer labor to complete and install the kiosk. The kiosk will display the trail map, interpretive trail education, safety tips, and guidelines for trail use to help reduce concerns of owners whose property borders the trail, and to further protect wildlife and habitat. The informational kiosk is a tangible representation of diverse interests and expertise coming together in our local rural community. |

Groundbreaking and the work begins!
On Sunday, October 7, 2007, Jim Denton led a work party to construct the informational kiosk in the town of Klickitat.
In addition to Jim, Pam and Steve Essley, Bev Linde,
Cheryl Steindorf, and Erven (Mitch) Mitchell
worked all day to construct it. |

If it were not for those rocks,
the digging would have been a lot easier.
The hardest part was digging two 3-foot deep holes for the posts, including removing a rock about 1 ˝ ft. long,
which alone took about two hours |

Ah, now that the boulder has been removed,
we can proceed with setting the posts. |

Jim did an amazing job designing the kiosk, cutting the wood, and planning the work party for the kiosk. Everyone worked very hard and the kiosk is great! It has a railroad station look to it, and Jim routed out the word “Klickitat” on one side and “Wrights” (the original name of Klickitat in 1903 when the railroad started service) on the other side. |

On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, with Bev and Barbara helping,
Jim placed a dark gray asphalt shingle roof on the kiosk.
This included a layer of tar paper, tile upon tile, metal drip protector that keeps wood from rotting, and special putty that prevents water from getting between the metal and wood base of the leggings, etc. |

KTC is gathering the items to display in the informational kiosk.
These will include the trail map, trail use guidelines,
interpretive trail education and safety reminders,
all protected behind a plexiglas sheet. |

On both work days a number of people stopped to talk to us. With the new surface, more people are definitely using the trail. |

KTC was one of 44 groups nationwide honored for its innovative efforts. The Kodak American Greenways Awards are made possible through the generous support of the Eastman Kodak Company. The awards are administered by The Conservation Fund, a recognized leader in working with local communities to expand the nation’s network of linked open spaces. The Kodak American Greenways Awards Grants Review Committee consists of conservation experts from around the country. The committee selected grant recipients from a pool of nearly 125 qualified applicants. “It’s exciting to be recognized nationally for our local trail,” said KTC President Cheryl Steindorf, a resident of Klickitat. “This trail would not be open to the public today had it not been for a lot of local residents pulling together.” KTC expresses sincere thanks and appreciation to the Eastman Kodak Company for its generosity in providing funding for the informational kiosk building materials.
